GOSC talk continues during FBAS 2025 in Beijing
On the morning of September 7, 2025, GOSC IPO held a session during the FBAS 2025 meeting focused on “data and AI for disaster mitigation” at the Beijing International Convention Center.
This GOSC session features five talks and a panel discussion, with representatives from CODATA, EGI, IRDR, CBAS, GOSC, and others participating. Mr. Francis P. Crawley from CODATA discussed ethics and governance in AI-enhanced disaster risk reduction (DRR) and introduced a PILOT AI ethics governance model. Prof. Saini Yang reviewed IRDR’s efforts to promote advanced ICT adoption within their community and outlined future goals. Dr. Yue Wang from AIR, CAS, presented a damage assessment model utilizing AI-driven remote sensing data for visualization and knowledge extraction. Prof. Virginia Murray explained the latest developments in UNDRR’s Hazard Information Profiles and UNESCO’s data policies related to DRR. Dr. Lili Zhang from GOSC IPO emphasized the importance of fostering a trustworthy culture, open science policies, interoperable e-infrastructure services, capacity building, and open collaboration in data and AI-driven DRR.
The panel discussion extended the conversation by exploring the advantages and challenges of using large-scale data and AI for SDGs research and implementation, with a focus on data accessibility, reliability, and reusability in DRR scenarios to support future alignment.
As part of an ongoing GOSC dialogue on disaster mitigation, GOSC enhances the open science environment by addressing SDG challenges and exploring potential solutions, with a focus on data and AI.
