CSTCloud Receives Visitors from CGS for Potential Open Science Collaboration

Date: Jun 19, 2023

On June 13, delegates from the China Geological Survey (CGS) visited the Computer Network Information Center (CNIC), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and were warmly welcomed by representatives of the China Science and Technology Cloud (CSTCloud) and the Global Open Science Cloud International Programme Office (GOSC IPO). Chaired by Professor LI Jianhui, Director of the CSTCloud Department and PI of the CAS GOSC project, the meeting initiated an in-depth discussion toward potential Open Science collaboration on Geoscience.

During the conversation, the CSTCloud team introduced the service delivery at the national research e-infrastructure, the CSTCloud (www.cstcloud.cn) operated by CNIC, and also reported the current progress of the GOSC Initiative. The CGS representatives introduced their Geoscience work, international collaboration on open science, and engagement in the Deep-time Digital Earth (DDE) Initiative. Group discussions highlighted several issues, including applying Open Science values and FAIR principles to Geoscience research, cross-border data sharing, cloud computing for data analysis, etc. After thorough communication, the two sides agreed on further open-science collaboration under the GOSC umbrella.

“This is a good start. We will continue this conversation and explore potential open-science alignment for geoscience research”, said Professor Ma Yongzheng from the China Geological Survey.

“By leveraging the CSTCloud technical capabilities and GOSC global network, we are willing to support the Open Science implementation of the DDE Initiative, and we welcome CGS and DDE to join the upcoming GOSC events this September in China,” said Professor LI.

As a second dialogue of this series since February, this meeting has undoubtedly revealed a clearer and stronger articulation of collaboration objectives and potential future plans. With a shared passion for Open Science and SDGs, we would expect a dynamic and sustainable collaboration in geoscience research between teams in the near future (Xueting LI, Lili ZHANG).

Upcoming GOSC events to make science inclusive and available for all:

International Symposium on Open Science Cloud (ISOSC) (September 4-6, 2023, Beijing)

2023 International Training Workshop on Open Science and SDGs (August 28-September 9, Beijing)
