Supporting Knowledge Sharing for Inclusive Science: A glimpse into the 2022 International Training Workshop on Open Science for SDGs

Date: Sep 01, 2022
As stated in the UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science, Open Science has significantly transformed the way of knowledge production and distribution, thereby increasingly being recognized as a key accelerator for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and a game-changer in bridging the science, technology, and innovation gaps and fulfilling the human rights to science. In light of this, the International Research Center of Big Data for Sustainable Development Goals (CBAS) cooperates with the CAS-TWAS Centre of Excellence on Space Technology for Disaster Mitigation (SDIM), Committee on Data of the International Science Council (CODATA; and in particular its Global Open Science Cloud Initiative, abbreviated as GOSC), Computer Network Information Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CNIC, CAS; and in particular the International Programme Office of GOSC initiative, abbreviated as GOSC IPO), and other supporting agencies to launch the 2022 international training workshop on Open Science and SDGs.
As an event to support knowledge sharing for accessible and inclusive science, this workshop covers several topics, such as Open Science Policies, SDGs Data Resources, SDG Technologies, SDG Platforms, and Demonstrations. By providing a scientific and practical guide to the use of Big Earth Data, the objective is to support capacity building on emerging open science technologies for SDGs research and actions. Worldwide experts and trainees joined this online event, warmly welcomed by representatives from the Bureau of International Cooperation of CAS, CBAS, SDIM, CODATA, WFEO, CNIC and its GOSC IPO during the opening ceremony on 29 August 2022.
"This event will provide a fantastic platform for worldwide stakeholders to share, learn, and progress together. We endeavor to take this opportunity to promote global collaboration and achieve the goal of leaving no one behind", says Mr. Wang Zhenyu, Deputy Director of the Bureau of International Cooperation, CAS. To highlight the open-science style, and to take full advantage of online training, 104 trainees from 35 countries and regions have been selected and recommended to join this evnt, with diverse backgrounds in science and industry. "Welcome everyone on board. We may not have a one-size-fits-all solution, but we can co-build our SDGs stories together in the following two weeks", says a workshop facilitator.
CNIC as an institution of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, is devoted to providing information infrastructures and platforms for research, management and science outreach. Our R&D team develop and operate China Science and Technology Network (CSTNet) and China Science and Technology Cloud (CSTCloud) to connect Chinese scientists with the world for globalized research and innovation. To support communication and cooperation among emerging open science platforms and demonstrations, our center and CODATA have agreed to formally launch GOSC IPO with CNIC as the host institution.
