Science Data Bank Recommended as Generalist Repository of Scientific Data and Springer Nature

Date: Oct 12, 2020

Science Data Bank, ScienceDB for short, was certified as a recommended generalist data repository to authors by Scientific Data and Springer Nature (https://www.springernature.com/gp/authors/research-data-policy/repositories-general/12327166) in September. ScienceDB is China's first repository included in the Generalist subsection of the recommendation list, complementing the other six well-known repositories such as Dryad, figshare, etc.
ScienceDB is a public and non-profit generalist data repository which is developed and maintained by the Computer Network Information Center, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Established in 2014 as a practice to implement FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable) principles of data sharing, ScienceDB has spared no effort to promote data submission by authors and open access to data publishing services. The repository accepts submissions from the entire scientific community across disciplinary boundaries and file formats, and publishes all kinds of research data with no charge of fee. All the delivered datasets on ScienceDB is under CC0 or CC BY 4.0 conditions. Meanwhile, DOI is assigned to each dataset by the repository for citation and access.
Apart from promoting standardized data management and FAIR sharing in China, ScienceDB has also been actively engaged in the international efforts to make research data, mostly from public funding, as open as possible and as closed as necessary. Built on China Science and Technology Cloud which supports cross-border interconnection and interoperability, the repository allows visitors out of China to access published data with no barriers. The portals provide English and Chinese bilingual services, facilitating international scholars and research teams to understand the contexts and download valuable data from China. Furthermore, the repository has been expanding its partnerships with academic journals, both in Chinese and English, to engage an increasing number of authors in its open access endeavor. To recognize the contribution of these authors and relevant research teams, the repository initiated Science Data Bank Data Sharing Award as a regular reward. Previously, ScienceDB was also certified by AGU as one of generalist repositories recommended to authors.
