Global Research Data Ark Initiative

Date: Apr 29, 2025

Research data stands both as a beacon illuminating the unknown and as a bridge facilitating dialogue across generations. However, systemic risks—such as data loss and shifts in policy—are leading to the irreversible erosion of these "scientific genes" of the digital era. Recently, we have witnessed the phase-out of long-standing scientific database systems, and a looming "deletion storm" threatens to erase decades of invaluable data in fields like public health, climate change, and extreme weather. The globally trusted framework for long-term research data preservation and sharing -- painstakingly built by the research community -- is now faces unprecedented disruption.

In response, the Science Data Bank (ScienceDB) has launched the Global Research Data Ark Initiative (GRDAI). This initiative is committed to the permanent preservation and open accessibility of research data, aiming to establish an open, collaborative, and sustainable long-term stewardship system that spans all research disciplines. By leveraging intelligent governance and global cooperation, GRDAI seeks to safeguard humanity’s scientific achievements against natural disasters, technological failures, or human-induced risks—ensuring these resources remain traceable, verifiable, and accessible for future generations.

We extend a call to researchers around the world to join us! If you are concerned about the fate of your research data, ScienceDB welcomes you to preserve and share it with the global community.
