Dr. Kei Hirak, professor in the department of computer science of Tokyo University, and Prof. Yutaka Ishikawa who is also the director of the information and technology center of Tokyo University, visited CSTNET (China Science and Technology network) on the morning of June, 9th.
Hosted by Professor Hualin Qian, the chief scientist of CSTNET, Prof. Kei Hiraki made the academic reports at Lecture Hall No.215 at 9:00am, with the topics “Toward world fastest computing and networking”and“High-speed HTTP data transfer system using TCP/IP”. Many research staffs and postgraduates from labs like CSTNET and Super Computer Center attended this lecture.

Professor Kei Hiraki mainly researches on the transfer performance of high speed network. His research group has won the “Bandwidth Challenge” awards of the SC conference for many times and has been keeping the “Land Speed Record” of Internet2. Focusing on the research project “Data Reservoir”, he introduced to us the high speed computing and network system which is applied to the massive scientific data processing and transfer, and the ultra-high-speed document acquisition and browse system which is used for general users to browse the Internet. The research project “Data Reservoir” is aimed to make data intensive scientific computing through the global high-speed and long-distance network for supporting the scientific experiments in the fields like Astronomy e-VLBI and High Energy Physics.
After finishing the lecture, Professor Kei Hiraki and Prof. Yutaka Ishikawa visited the plant rooms of CSTNET and Super Computer Center in the company of our technicians. Then, both CNIC and the guests introduced each other’s work and deeply discussed some interested topics like high speed network transfer and supercomputing at conference room No.107.
