The Pacific Rim Undergraduate Experiences (PRIME) program of 2009 has been closed successfully on August 26 at Computer Network Information Center (CNIC), one of the 13 host institutions this year. The two prime students co-tutored by CNIC and UCSD (University of California, San Diego) professors completed their projects titled respectively as Avian Flu: Drug Resistance by N1 Mutants N294S and H274Y (Chelsea Wong) and A Search for Small Molecule Inhibitors against Hemagglutinin (Michael Siy).

In 2004, against a backdrop of growing globalization of the workplace and need for international collaborations in scientific research, PRIME was launched by UCSD and PRAGMA (Pacific Rim Applications and Grid Middleware Assembly) partners including CNIC. This program provides opportunities not only for the UCSD-based students but also the researchers in the host institutions to experience and make perfect transnational collaborative research. Up till now CNIC has hosted 12 undergraduates from UCSD. Abundant experience has been accumulated during the past 5 years.
