CAS-Microsoft Asia Academy e-Science Symposium Held in Beijing

On May 20,CAS-Microsoft Asia Academy e-Science Symposium was held in CNIC. CAS Vice Secretary General Tan Tieniu attended the meeting and delivered a report. Standing Vice Presidents of Microsoft Asia Academy Wang Jian and Song Luolan attended the meeting. And over 60 representatives from CAS headquarters, CNIC, Institute of Geology, Institute of Computer Technology, National Observatory, Institute of High Energy as well as Microsoft Asia Academy.
 

CAS Vice Secretary General Tan Tieniu gave briefings on the scientific research informatization of CAS, and pointed out that informatization was to be a historic process of fully utilizing information technology, exploring information resources, promoting information exchange and knowledge sharing, reform organization operation and management mode, promoting type change of economic society development. And he said that Scientific research informatization is a necessary road to raise research level, innovation and effectiveness, and CAS is facing the huge challenge of e-Science and development opportunity.

Standing Vice President of Microsoft Asia Academy Wang Jian made a report entitled “Internet as Research Infrastructure”, Director Prof. Zhang Dongmei made a report entitled “Web-based Recognition Research Platform”,Adnan Mahmud project manager made a report of “Tools for Accessing Environment Data”,Prof. Zhang Chunhui delivered a report of “Building Data-centric Large Scale Computing Infrastructure”��CAS Member Sun Jiulin made a report entitled “Research network for North-east Asian (China, Russia and Mongolia) eco-biology and resource environment cooperation”, assistant Prof. Luo Ze reported on “Introduction of joint research base between CAS and Qinhai Lake state-level natural reserve”, Prof. Xuzhiwei made a report of “Support e-science system software”, Prof. Chen Gang reported on “High Energy Physics Grid Computing and China” and Prof. Zhao Yongheng reported on “LAMOST and Microsoft World Wide Telescope”.    

All the participants had heated discussions and exchanges, and they held that the realization of e-Science will provide a informatization scientific research environment, and this will play a key role in promoting trans-discipline trans-region exchange and collaboration, and realization of common people –oriented research activities. It is hoped that the symposium will provide a good opportunity for further cooperation between CAS and Microsoft Asia Academy in the area of research informatization.
