20th Anniversary of CAS High Performance Computing Service

On December 14 2016, the academic symposium and software release conference was jointly held by the Computer Network Information Center (CNIC) and the Institute of Software (ISCAS) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the high performance computing service of the CAS. More than 90 decision makers and experts from nearly 30 organizations participated in the celebration and discussion.

Six generations of supercomputers have been introduced since CAS initiated its high performance computing service in 1996, since when the computing capacity has improved from 6 gigaflops of the first generation to 2.3 petaflops of the sixth generation. A three-tier architecture of the HPC environment has been constructed which incorporates the headquarter, regional sub-centers and institutional centers, providing computing service for CAS scientists and researchers in different domain areas and supporting various important research of nearly 300 research institutions, universities, companies and other organizations.

Apart from the improvement of hardware environment, CAS also gives high priorities to software development. A considerable number of parallel software development efforts have been made in the past two decades, producing dozens of parallel software packages for various fields such as computational aerodynamics, computational cosmology, computational materials and the simulation of forging and casting. During the conference, CNIC and ISCAS jointly released a series of software including MetaSpark, Crystal MD and CCFD-MGMB. The achievements in software development have made substantial contributions to scientific innovation, economic development and social development by supporting a wide range of areas such as physical sciences, chemical sciences, materials sciences, information sciences, life sciences, aeronautics and astronautics, and energy industry. In particular, two HPC applications of the CAS, 10M-Core Scalable Fully-Implicit Solver for Nonhydrostatic Atmospheric Dynamics (ISCAS et al.) and Extreme-Scale Phase Field Simulations of Coarsening Dynamics on the Sunway Taihulight Supercomputer (CNIC et al.), entered the finalist of the prestigious 2016 ACM Gordon Bell Prize. The former was finally selected as the winner of the year.
