Key Member of Committee on Data for Science and Technology (CODATA)

Committee on Data for Science and Technology (CODATA) is an interdisciplinary Scientific Committee of the International Council for Science (ICSU), which works to improve the quality, reliability, management and accessibility of data of importance to all fields of science and technology. The Chinese Academy of Sciences joined in CODATA in 1984 as a national member and has since then organized the Chinese National Committee for CODATA (CN-CODATA or CODATA-China), which comprises 24 members from the CAS, related ministries, universities and commissions. CAS Vice President Prof. DING Zhongli, is the current Chairman of the CN-CODATA.

China joined CODATA in 1984 represented by the Chinese Academy of Sciences as the National Member. The Chinese National Committee for CODATA (CN-CODATA) ever since has been making efforts on promoting China's data activities of science and technology through its executive body - the Secretariat located at CNIC. CN-CODATA is currently composed of 24 members from the CAS, related ministries and universities chaired by CAS Vice President Prof. DING Zhongli. Prof. LI Jianhui of CNIC currently serves as the Secretary-General of CN-CODATA.

Main Activities of Chinese National Committee for CODATA include: 1) to investigate and develop an in-depth understanding of the domestic data activities and trends for establishing databases on science and technology (S&T). CN-CODATA has broadcast the domestic S&T data activities to the international community; 2) to hold annual General Assembly of CN-CODATA with the purpose of discussing its activities, introducing on-going tasks of its data groups and bringing in the academic achievement of CODATA; 3) to promote open access to domestic S&T information resources towards more efficient use of the S&T data; 4) to organize domestic working groups and relevant meetings within different academic spheres; 5) to hold domestic and international academic activities; 6) to organize participants to attend the biennial CODATA International Conference and relevant working meetings; 7) to push forward and sponsor relevant publications; 8) and to initiate and organize the implementation of programs on scientific database construction and data sharing.
