GOSC Representatives Join a cyberinfrastructure dialogue

Date: May 31, 2023

On May 22nd, 2023, the Nepal Research and Education Network delegation visited CNIC, CAS, to explore potential collaboration. Chaired by LI Chong, Director of R&D Management Division, CNIC briefly reviewed the current status and coopeartion network of CNICs e-infrastructures, highlighting development in research facilities, initiatives, and platforms, such as the CSTNet, CSTCloud, CSTR Identification Platform, National Basic Science Data Center, CAS Data Center System, Science Data Bank and some other science communication initiatives.

Dr. Rajan Parajuli, Executive Director of NREN, shared their institutional work for cyberinfrastructure development in Nepal. As a non-profit organization, the Nepal Research and Education Network (NREN) aims to boost the development of the national computational grid by establishing a high-speed research and education network. He also introduced the connectivity solutions in support of domain research, such as the case of telemedicine, environmental monitoring, etc.

Representatives from the CAS Global Open Science Cloud Initiative joined this conversation and briefly introduced the international cooperation of CSTNet and the Global Open Science Cloud Initiative. According to the UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science, open science infrastructures are vitally important to support open science implementation by serving the needs of different communities in open labs, open science platforms, software forges, virtual research environments, etc. In line with open science and supported by seed funding from the Chinese Academy of Science (CAS), this GOSC Initiative highlights Open Science and international research collaborations by facilitating accessibility, interconnectivity, interoperability, and inclusiveness of research e-infrastructures across domains and regions.

"Today's meeting marks a good start, and we can promote our collaboration step by step," said LI Jianhui, PI of the CAS GOSC project. We believe this conversation opens a new threshold to further collaboration between research e-infrastructures under the umbrella of open science. Moreover, close engagement with research e-infrastructures in Southeast Asia will certainly help showcase GOSC.
